Archaeologists found a treasure of 79 gold and silver coins in a rocky area near the village of Galabovo in the Rhodope Mountains. The find consists of 5 Byzantine hyperpyrons and 74 Venetian grosso, announced the head of the team Dr. Borislav Borislavov from Sofia University "St Kliment Ohridski". The coins were found just 30 cm under the ground in a cleft in a rock, covered up with stones, which is a typical of a Thracian offering. The cleft was in the base of a sanctuary later functioning as a Christian chapel. The five Byzantine coins of a total weight of about 4,5 grams are dated between 1295 and 1328 and are of exceptional workmanship. The silver Venetian grosso are from the beginning of the 13th century and are the biggest coin collection ever found in South Bulgaria.
