29th June – The Danube Day

danubeday.org

Over 81 million people in 14 countries will celebrate Danube Day on the 29th June. Celebrating this day together helps protect the Danube River so they can be used and enjoyed by generations to come. Over 169 events involving tens of thousands of people took place in 2008.
Danube Day is a celebration of a cleaner, safer river following 15 years of international cooperation. Huge festivals on the banks of the rivers; public meetings and fun, educational events pay tribute to the Danube, its peoples and the progress that has been made.

These events inspire people, communities and countries to work together across borders. They encourage people to look beyond their national boundaries and consider the multitude of peoples living in the Danube Basin. Across the region, governmental, non-governmental and private sector organizations are working together to make the sixth Danube Day the best yet.
Danube Day 2009 is bursting with inspiring events in all 14 major Danube countries. The scale of Danube Day is huge, encompassing ambitious basin-wide events; cross-border activities; high profile national events; regional celebrations and village festivities. The programme includes public festivals; conferences; competitions; aquatic adventures; awareness raising actions; river clean-ups and fun youth events.

This year children and students of the Danube Basin will be able to participate in the Danube Art Master schools competition,(organised by the Danube Environmental Forum).
Artworks of natural materials or waste, digital pictures and drawings will compete on national level.
The best works will be presented on the international competition. The deadline for the applying of the artworks is 31 June 2009
