The Danube bridge 2 will be officially opened today

The longest bridge over the Danube was officially inaugurated. It will connect Vidin (Bulgaria) and Calafat (Romania.) The bridge was built with the gratuitous help of the EU. EU Commissioner for regional development Johannes Hahn, President Rosen Plevneliev, premiers of Bulgaria and Romania Plamen Oresharski and Victor Ponta have arrived for the official ribbon cutting ceremony. All of the Bulgarian prime ministers who have held office since 2000 have been invited for the ceremony – among them Ivan Kostov, Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Sergey Stanishev and Boiko Borisov. Danube bridge 2 is a road and rail bridge between the cities of Calafat, Romania and Vidin, Bulgaria. It will be the second bridge on the shared section of the Danube between Romania and Bulgaria. The bridge is built by the Spanish company Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas, and the cost is about $160 million. Construction officially began on 13 May 2007 in Vidin in the presence of Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and Special Coordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe Erhard Busek.
