Four Bulgarian cities to compete for European capital of culture 2019

Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna and Veliko Tarnovo are the four Bulgarian cities, candidates for European Capital of Culture 2019, recommended by the selection committee.
The four cities have time till the summer to complete their applications. The selection committee will convene in the third quarter of 2014 to make the final selection.

The competition among the Bulgarian cities Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv, Burgas, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Russe and Shumen started in the end of 2012. Their candidacies were considered by a selection committee of 13 experts in culture – six appointed by Bulgaria and seven – by the EU institutions.

The other country, which will host the initiative European Capital of Culture in 2019, will be Italy.
