A holiday in the kingdom of roses

Once upon a time, in a time which no one remembers any more, in a distant country, called Persia, a powerful shah ruled. His beloved wife died, but granted him, his biggest wealth – his lovely daughter, who loved her father more than anything in the world and took care of the endless rose garden. After a glorious battle the shah decided to mark his triumph in a grandiose manner. He wanted to build a mosque so high, that the whole valley could be seen from its minaret. No one from the masons in...

On the Vitosha Mountain again

Sofia city is located at the foothills of Vitosha Mountain and logically the natural park Vitosha is the most preferable site for tourism sports and recreation among the nature by the citizens and the guests of the capital. I also make some tracking tours, mountain bike adventures and photo outings on the slopes of the magnificent mountain, that’s why I often write short stories about the time I’ve spent there.

Last Sunday was one those calm sunny days which should be spent in the...

Winter Spa Emotions on the Black Sea

The heavy snow has covered the whole country and we are all looking for a peaceful and warm place to escape from the cold winter spell. The cold sand on the beach and the thunderous sea provoke my secret desire to dive into the infinite azure.
Although the hot summer days full of emotions and jolly sunny rays are still far away, I know that I can again find my getaway on the Black sea coast. Several top quality hotels present great offers for a dreamt spa vacation with a scent of a vast sea....

The 14th of February – love holiday or wine feast

Bulgaria is a crossing point of different customs and traditions since the Antiquity. On the 14th of February Bulgarians usually celebrate the day of St. Trifon Zarezan. The holiday is dedicated to the wine and wine-growers. On this day, after a solemn mass, wine-growers cut several outgrowths of the vines in their vineyards. This is an ancient fertility ritual. The celebration continues with a “King of the vineyard” contest. The most honest and good-natured man from the wine-growers becomes a...

An Old-Time Story in Lovech

“Do you love theatre, my boy? If yes, get ready to watch now…because I will perform a real old-fashioned play for you. We should just pass through this wooden old door and we will go back in times as long as 100 years ago.
Look at this table, in the corner, where the old woman is kneading dough… Hey, missus let us treat this boy with our delicious meal…”

Those were the words, spoken to me by the slender middle-aged man, who met me at the entrance of the Ethnographic Museum in the city of...

Mummer’s festival in Pernik – the procession of the magical masks

Form 25th to 27th of January the town of Pernik was sounded by bells, drums, folklore music and indefinite, deafening noise, coming from some strange people dressed in furs, women costumes, funny or really scary masks, and many enormous bells around their waists. The central walking alley was full of spectators, watching these diabolical creatures, jumping like mad and shaking their bodies in some ritual dances. The reason for this colourful fair was the 12th issue of Surva – the International...

Skiing on Buzludja

This year’s early snowfall provided excellent skiing conditions everywhere in the mountains. Please, have in mind that the Mountain Rescue Service announced high avalanche danger everywhere in the mountains, so take precautions and always follow the marked slopes.

We started our trip to Buzludja site, which is just 35 km from Stara Zagora, and less than 15 km from the beautiful Kazanlak. Buzludja peak itself is just 1441 m above the sea level, but offers a decent ski slope for intermediates...

Winter outing in Vitosha Mountain

The New Year came with a lot of snow and the mountains revealed their extreme cold beauty and their tempting dangerous charm. So I couldn’t resist and last weekend I went for a walk in Vitosha Mountain. I equipped myself as an Arctic explorer, because the weather was rather cold, I called a friend of mine, threw my camera bag over my shoulder and I left my sweet, snug home, making my way to the white covered, proudly standing Vitosha Mountain.

After half an hour my friend and I reached...
